“Wicked” has been making waves at the worldwide box office. Directed by Jon M. Chu, this prequel to “The Wizard of Oz” is based on the first act of the 2003 Broadway musical. Starring Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande-Butera as Galinda, it had an impressive debut with $112.5 million, the third-highest opening weekend of 2024 up to that point. As of Sunday morning, it’s projected to add $29 million in international markets by the end of its second weekend, reaching a cumulative $359.3 million worldwide within 10 days.
By hitting this milestone so quickly, “Wicked” has entered the Top 15 of the year’s box office rankings with ease. It’s already outgrossed over a dozen major 2024 hits, including some with lower budgets like “Longlegs”. Its current trajectory suggests it’ll likely join the Top 10 before long. Notably, its box office success isn’t mainly driven by international markets, as it’s earned less than half of its domestic gross overseas, indicating it’s a homegrown hit even if the related IPs have less impact abroad.
