In 2024, horror movies had varied fates. Some like Longlegs had critical and box office success, while others like Abigail and The First Omen had good reviews but underperformed at the box office. Meanwhile, an A24 horror movie, Heretic, has reached significant box office milestones.
Heretic, directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Adams, is a religious horror film about Mormon missionaries and a sinister man. Its cast includes Hugh Grant and others. It’s now crossed $35 million worldwide ($26 million domestic, $9 million overseas) and made it into the top 10 highest-grossing horror movies of 2024 domestically, beating several other films.
Heretic isn’t a conventional horror film. With its focus on high-minded themes about religion and belief, it differs from typical horror movies. Maybe its uniqueness is what’s drawing audiences, even with big-budget competitors out there.
