A recent update on the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has sparked renewed speculation about Johnny Depp’s return. Disney is moving forward with a sixth installment, and while Depp’s involvement had seemed unlikely due to his estrangement from the studio following legal battles with Amber Heard, it reports that there could be a path for his comeback.
Producer Jerry Bruckheimer is working on two scripts for the upcoming film, one of which may feature Depp’s iconic character, Captain Jack Sparrow. This development suggests that Disney is not ready to let go of the profitable Pirates franchise, despite its hiatus since 2017.
While there have been multiple rewrites and the project was initially framed as a reboot, the franchise’s future without Depp at its helm remains uncertain. Alternate casting ideas, such as Margot Robbie in a spinoff, failed to generate the same enthusiasm. With Depp gradually making a comeback in other projects, and Bruckheimer hinting at new possibilities, a return for the actor seems increasingly likely. However, the film’s success may ultimately depend on whether Depp and Disney can resolve their past differences.
