The director of Sebastian Stan’s 2024 biopic “The Apprentice” has spoken out regarding its poor box office performance. Stan, known for his roles in the MCU as Bucky Barnes and in other acclaimed projects like “I, Tonya” and “Pam & Tommy”, starred as Donald Trump in the biopic.
“The Apprentice” boasted an 83% critical score and 84% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, despite its positive reception and a timely release just before the 2024 U.S. presidential election, it only grossed $12 million worldwide.
In an interview, director Ali Abbasi expressed his confusion over the film’s underwhelming performance in the U.S. and its being labeled controversial. He pointed out that the real-life subject, Trump, is already highly controversial, making it puzzling that the movie would face such issues.
What likely led to the movie’s box office struggles were outside factors. Given the polarizing nature of Trump, his supporters were probably uninterested in a film that didn’t portray him favorably, while those who oppose him were likely tired of seeing more about him, especially with extensive media coverage around the election. Sadly, Stan’s potentially award-worthy performance didn’t draw enough audiences to theaters, and these external elements sealed the movie’s fate at the box office.
In conclusion, despite its critical acclaim, “The Apprentice” couldn’t overcome the divisive opinions surrounding its subject matter and suffered a disappointing box office run.
