Emma D’Arcy Wants Weapon for Rhaenyra in ‘House of Dragon’ S3

by Barbara Miller

In the highly anticipated “House of the Dragon” series, which serves as a spinoff of the iconic “Game of Thrones” and is based on George R.R. Martin’s “Fire & Blood”, there are exciting developments on the horizon. The show premiered in 2022 and has been chronicling the Targaryen civil war. Season 2 returned earlier this year, and now season 3 is in the works.

Emma D’Arcy, who portrays Rhaenyra and uses they/them pronouns, has made an interesting request for the upcoming season. In a recent interview, D’Arcy revealed that they want Rhaenyra to have a weapon in season 3. They expressed their envy towards the male characters in the show who always have swords to hold during filming, while they and other characters are left wondering where to put their hands. D’Arcy is quite clear about this desire and has even communicated it to the showrunner, Ryan Condal.

Considering the storyline, it would make sense for Rhaenyra to carry a sword in season 3. The season 2 finale sets up a situation where Rhaenyra and her allies are preparing for war. Even though much of her fighting will be on dragonback, a sword is still standard battle gear. Moreover, with the central conflict set to intensify in season 3 as opposing forces engage in open combat, having a weapon would allow Rhaenyra to be more involved in the action.

The future of “House of the Dragon” also holds other aspects to look forward to. It’s confirmed that the show will take four seasons to cover the entirety of “Fire & Blood”. Season 3 is expected to start filming in the first half of 2025 and likely premiere in 2026. Similar to season 2, it may feature eight episodes. While there are still many uncertainties about the later seasons, including the number of episodes in season 4 and potential delays, fans are eager to see how Rhaenyra’s story unfolds.

D’Arcy has been a standout in the cast, yet in season 2, Rhaenyra’s character felt somewhat restrained. With the push from antagonists like Aemond and Aegon in the upcoming season, there’s potential for more violent and action-packed moments for her. The evolving dynamic between Rhaenyra and Alicent, which was a highlight in season 2, also remains an aspect that fans hope to see continue to develop. Whether D’Arcy will indeed get their wish for Rhaenyra to have a sword in season 3 remains to be seen, but it surely adds to the excitement and speculation surrounding the show’s next installment.
