Taron Egerton Sets Condition for ‘Carry-On 2’ Sequel on Netflix

by Barbara Miller

Taron Egerton’s action movie “Carry-On” has just landed on Netflix, yet he’s already weighing in on the possibility of a sequel. Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, the movie features Egerton as a young TSA agent who gets blackmailed into allowing dangerous luggage onto a Christmas Eve flight. He’s joined by co-stars like Jason Bateman, Sofia Carson, and Theo Rossi.

While on the “Today” show, when asked about a potential “Carry-On 2”, Egerton said he’d be “open to it”, but emphasized that it would need an “innovative, creative idea” to justify its creation. He also noted that sequels have worked well for the “Die Hard” franchise, which has been a significant point of comparison for “Carry-On”, suggesting his movie could potentially evolve into a franchise too.

What Egerton’s comments mean for a “Carry-On” sequel is that his character, Ethan Kopek, would need an even more compelling situation. The connections between “Carry-On” and “Die Hard” have been a major talking point in the film’s promotion. Unlike John McLane from “Die Hard”, Kopek is a less self-assured protagonist who grows and changes throughout the first movie. By the end, he’s a very different character, and this transformation could pose challenges for crafting another convincing character arc in a sequel.

Looking at where “Carry-On 2” could take Egerton’s action hero, while the first movie has an 86% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, indicating its appeal to classic action-thriller tropes has resonated with critics, a sequel might need to up the ante. If Netflix decides to pursue it, perhaps putting Egerton’s character in an even more dire scenario, like one that endangers his infant child, could raise the stakes and create a compelling sequel. Interestingly, the ending of the first “Carry-On” sees Kopek taking on fatherhood, so it may have already provided the perfect catalyst for a follow-up story that could be just as engaging as the original.
