Hulk Villain Returns After 16 Years in Captain America Trailer

by Barbara Miller

The latest trailer for “Captain America: Brave New World” gives viewers a fresh look at Sam Wilson’s new foe in the MCU, the Leader. The movie’s cast features a host of Marvel heroes and villains, including Joaquin Torres (the Falcon), Sidewinder, and the Red Hulk. However, it appears that Tim Blake Nelson’s Samuel Sterns, aka the Leader, is the mastermind behind the events, making his return 16 years after his first appearance in 2008’s “The Incredible Hulk”.

Marvel Entertainment has released the new trailer on YouTube, which showcases new footage of Sam Wilson’s Captain America suit and helmet, Joaquin Torres’ costume, and a quick shot of Samuel Sterns. While the trailer keeps Sterns’ appearance mostly in shadow, it includes an ominous line from him: “Captain America, you don’t even know what this is”.

What the new trailer reveals is that Marvel is still concealing Samuel Sterns’ true appearance in “Captain America: Brave New World”. In “The Incredible Hulk”, Sterns helped Emil Blonsky turn into the Abomination, and in the process, was nearly killed when one of his injuries got infected with the Hulk’s blood, leading to his transformation into the Leader with a large head and green skin in the comics. But in the trailer’s silhouette of Sterns, he doesn’t seem to have that iconic big head. Nevertheless, the fact that Marvel is hiding him in the promotional material suggests he’ll at least have green skin and some facial alterations. Given where he is in the MCU’s timeline, Sterns could potentially change his appearance at will, like She-Hulk and the Abomination.

Our take on the new trailer is that “Captain America: Brave New World” could feature one of the MCU’s most intelligent villains. The Leader’s superhuman intelligence is his most potent weapon, and the trailer teases his role in a global conspiracy involving Gamma mutates, terrorist groups, and world governments. If the movie bucks the MCU trend of defeating main villains and spares the Leader’s life, Samuel Sterns could become a highly dangerous supervillain and a prime candidate for the main antagonist role in future projects such as “Young Avengers”, a “Thunderbolts” sequel, or even a Hulk-centered movie or show.
