With the return of Michael C. Hall’s Dexter in “Dexter: Resurrection”, showrunner Clyde Phillips has detailed how the actor was crucial in getting the sequel approved and in expanding the franchise along with “Dexter: Original Sin”. This new series is the second sequel to the long-running crime mystery that aired from 2006 to 2013. Phillips has been involved in all of the franchise’s shows, from the original to “Dexter: New Blood” and the prequel “Dexter: Original Sin”.
As the details of Dexter’s first kills are being revealed after the premiere of “Dexter: Original Sin”, Phillips spoke to Screen Rant about how Hall’s interest in more stories led to new opportunities. He said Hall initiated the idea of continuing Dexter’s story past the events of “New Blood” and even called him. After Hall approved Phillips’ pitch, and then Showtime and Paramount gave the go-ahead, “Resurrection” was greenlit while “Original Sin” was still in production.
Despite the concurrent writing and filming of the two shows, Phillips noted that there’s little overlap between “Original Sin” and “Resurrection”, stating they’re largely separate entities.
What this means for “Dexter: Original Sin” is that Hall will still have a role. Even though he’s reprising Dexter in the sequel series, he’s also a producer and narrator for the prequel. So, while he’s passing the Dexter role to Patrick Gibson in the prequel, his influence will be felt on and off screen, making “Original Sin” an important part of the franchise.
Our take on Phillips’ tease is that the Dexter franchise is set to become more expansive than ever. Even though the original series ended over a decade ago, it’s clear there’s still a lot of potential. In 2023, there were reports of spin-offs focusing on supporting characters like Harrison Morgan and the origin of the Trinity Killer. Coupled with Hall’s eagerness to return as the lead, both “Resurrection” and “Original Sin” could have long futures. And while there are no crossovers planned currently, future seasons might see storylines that bridge the two settings.
