Five years after the conclusion of “Gotham”, actors Morena Baccarin and Ben McKenzie sat down for an interview to discuss the show. The two first met on the set of McKenzie’s prior project, “The O.C.”, but their relationship grew when they starred opposite each other in the DC series. In “Gotham”, McKenzie played a young Jim Gordon, and the show also featured David Mazouz as Bruce Wayne, Sean Pertwee as Alfred Pennyworth, Cory Michael Smith as Edward Nygma, and Robin Lord Taylor as the Penguin.
Baccarin was initially a guest star in the first season, portraying Dr. Leslie “Lee” Thompkins, who is Batman’s doctor in the comics. She became a series regular in later seasons. During the show’s run, Baccarin and McKenzie got married and started a family, and they remain a couple to this day. Since then, Baccarin has continued acting, with a recent appearance in “Deadpool & Wolverine”, while McKenzie has pursued acting and also become an economic commentator.
The couple recently appeared together at Tokyo Comic Con 2024 and gave an interview. When asked about their experience with Japanese fans, McKenzie described it as “awesome” and mentioned receiving wonderful fan letters from people who said their work had changed their lives, which made him happy. Baccarin agreed, stating that all the Japanese fans were amazing and that she had read all the lovely letters and gifts she received. It’s important to note that the interview was translated from Japanese to English, so the quotes might not precisely match the original wording.
Later in the interview, Baccarin shared about taking their children, aged 11, 8, and 3, to the premiere of “Deadpool & Wolverine”, joking that it was perhaps too violent for kids. McKenzie then revealed that he’d shown the kids a bit of “Gotham”, which Baccarin noted was also quite violent.
What Baccarin and McKenzie’s comments about “Gotham” signify is that they have a warm connection to the show that brought them together. They hold a fondness for the fans and continue to engage with them, even a decade after the show premiered. Moreover, as their older children grow up and start watching “Gotham”, it offers a charming way for them to see their parents’ relationship develop, despite the show’s violent and wild nature.
Despite its reputation as one of DC’s more outlandish shows, “Gotham” is an enjoyable and interesting take on Batman’s lore that highlights their acting skills. Baccarin has previously called the filming experience “really cool” and thought the ending was great. McKenzie has discussed his mix of anxiety and excitement in taking on the iconic role of Jim Gordon, which was written with him in mind. Both actors should be proud of their time on the series and the cult following it has amassed. Sharing “Gotham” with their family is also a fun way for them to stay connected to their past work.
