As filming for Criminal Minds: Evolution season 3 has concluded, star Paget Brewster has provided a hopeful update regarding the show’s future, specifically expressing optimism for a season 4. When viewers last tuned in to the Paramount+ revival, a significant moment was the stabbing of Elias Voit by his fellow inmates. While showrunner Erica Messer has stated that Voit will return for season 3, the circumstances surrounding the stabbing, such as whether it was staged and for what purpose, remain uncertain.
Brewster, who portrays Emily Prentiss, took to social media to announce that the filming of Criminal Minds: Evolution season 3 had wrapped. This revival serves as a direct continuation of the original Criminal Minds series, which is why it’s sometimes referred to as season 18. In her post, Brewster stated, “We are optimistic we’ll get a season 19.”
What this latest update implies is that more news about the show should be expected early next year. Season 2 presented the BAU with typical challenges, testing them both mentally and physically. Looking ahead, the series has teased several developments, including the potential introduction of Prentiss’ sister. In a flashback during the season 2 finale, Brewster’s character mentions having a sibling, and it seems their relationship isn’t the most amicable. There’s also the cliffhanger involving Voit, who may have orchestrated his own attack.
While it’s unclear if the show will actually bring in Prentiss’ sister, despite showrunner Erica Messer’s tease of the possibility, there are some confirmed castings. Aimee Garcia, known for her role in “Lucifer”, will play Dr. Julia Ochoa in a multi-episode arc and will have some friction with Alvez. Additionally, Matthew Gray Gubler has confirmed his return as Dr. Spencer Reid, though only for one episode. Dr. Ochoa, described as one of the country’s leading neuropsychiatrists, is tasked with helping a high-profile patient recover from brain trauma caused by an injury. She and Alvez differ in their approaches, with Alvez favoring a more aggressive one.
With the filming wrap, more announcements about the crime drama revival are likely to surface as the new year progresses. This could include details about potential new additions to the cast and the reason for Dr. Reid’s return to the BAU after being away for several seasons. There’s also a possibility of an early renewal, considering how previous announcements have been made.
Our take on Criminal Minds’ renewal chances is that it’s been a relatively smooth journey so far. The revival has seen quick renewals in the past. Season 2 was confirmed just a few months after the revival’s debut, and season 3 was announced before season 2 even premiered. There’s always the question of how long the revival can endure, given that the original series had a long run that might be hard to replicate in the current streaming landscape. However, with a shorter episode count and a more focused narrative, it seems plausible that Paramount+ will continue the series with the BAU agents for some time.
