Kevin Smith, renowned for his work on projects like the low-budget comedy trilogy “Clerks” and the more recent “Tusk”, as well as his contributions to Netflix’s “Masters of the Universe” shows, is now diving into a new venture. He’s teaming up with Universal to develop a series called “Local Heroes”.
Smith will take on the roles of writer and executive producer for this upcoming mystery-comedy series. “Local Heroes” is centered around comic book store regulars who find themselves solving crimes in their hometown. Inspired by Smith’s own comic shop, “Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash”, the show aims to combine the charm of a small town with humor and mystery. The series is being developed for NBC, and Smith is joining forces with Josh Siegal and Dylan Morgan, alumni of “30 Rock”, who will co-write and also serve as executive producers. Additional producers include Sean Hayes and Todd Milliner of “Hazy Mills Productions” (known for shows like “Grimm” and “Hot in Cleveland”), along with Jordan Cerf. Smith announced the news on Instagram.
What “Local Heroes” means in the context of Smith’s career is that it builds on his previous forays into pop culture. It follows the success of projects like the cult-hit “Comic Book Men” reality series and his “SModCast” podcast network. This new series marks his return to television, this time with a comedic mystery format that’s characteristic of his unique style. It expands his TV portfolio, which already includes directing episodes of shows like “The Flash” and “Supergirl”.
“Local Heroes” also taps into the rising popularity of comedy series. It’s following in the footsteps of Universal’s “Hacks”, which won an Emmy this year against FX’s acclaimed drama “The Bear”. Universal’s next comedy is set to incorporate the charm and humor that are synonymous with Smith’s work, leveraging his personal connection to comic book culture and his long-standing relationship with fans. Moreover, with the involvement of the “30 Rock” veterans Siegal and Morgan, there’s an expectation of a sharp, witty script paired with a high-quality production from “Hazy Mills”.
Smith’s upcoming mystery series is that “Local Heroes” could potentially become his next cult classic. Smith’s decision to create this series seems like a natural progression of his passion for storytelling and geek culture. Its setting provides an ideal backdrop for his humor and love of pop culture to truly stand out. Working alongside other respected comedy writers and producers, the characters – comic book fans turned crime-solvers – have numerous opportunities for humor driven by their personalities and clever plot developments. “Local Heroes” has the potential to be a remarkable addition to Smith’s diverse body of work and could blaze a trail in the current wave of comedy offerings.
