Apple TV+ Cancels Sci-Fi Series Sunny After One Season

by Barbara Miller

Apple TV+ has decided to cancel its sci-fi series Sunny after just one season, leaving viewers with lingering questions following its cliffhanger finale. The cancellation comes as the streaming platform wraps up its year, making final decisions on several shows amid a flurry of renewals and axed projects.

Sunny, co-produced by A24 and created by Katie Robbins, was set in Japan and based on Colin O’Sullivan’s novel The Dark Manual. The series starred Rashida Jones as Suzie, a woman whose life is turned upside down when her husband and son disappear in a mysterious plane crash. Despite its intriguing premise and strong performances, the show failed to gain enough momentum to continue, leaving its season 1 finale unresolved.

Alongside Sunny, several other notable cancellations have been announced. FX pulled the plug on The Old Man, the Jeff Bridges-led action thriller, after its first season couldn’t replicate the buzz it generated earlier. Netflix also announced the cancellation of Girls5eva after three seasons. However, there’s some positive news as Hulu renewed Tell Me Lies for another season.

Critics had largely praised Sunny upon its debut in July, with the series earning the title of Apple TV+’s highest-rated sci-fi show of the year on Rotten Tomatoes. However, since then, Sunny’s ratings have slipped, with the audience score dropping to 66%. While critics lauded Jones’ performance and the show’s imaginative premise, it wasn’t enough to build lasting momentum.

The season finale of Sunny teased new developments as Suzie, alongside a domestic robot, began to unravel the mystery of her family’s disappearance. Unfortunately for fans, these storylines will remain unresolved, with the cancellation now official.

Apple TV+ has seen both successes and challenges in 2024. While Sunny met its end, the streaming service has renewed 17 shows this year, including hit series like For All Mankind, The Morning Show, and Slow Horses. In contrast, six shows, including Sunny, Time Bandits, and Schmigadoon!, were cancelled.

As a relatively new player in the streaming space, Apple TV+ has focused primarily on original content, which often involves limited series with definitive endings. However, with Sunny’s cliffhanger ending left hanging, the platform’s decision to pull the plug has drawn attention, especially as its limited series strategy continues to evolve.
