A newly released image from the biographical sports drama “Unstoppable” spotlights Don Cheadle’s powerful performance as real-life wrestling coach Shawn Charles. The movie tells the inspiring story of Anthony Robles (Jharrel Jerome), who, despite being born with one leg, went on to become a champion wrestler with the support of his coach, Charles, and his mother Judy (Jennifer Lopez). The cast also includes Bobby Cannavale, Michael Peña, Chimechi Oparanozie, Parker Sack, Jordan Wallace, and Shawn Hatosy. Since its TIFF premiere in September and limited theatrical release in December, “Unstoppable” has earned an impressive Certified Fresh score of 82% on Rotten Tomatoes.
It is now sharing an exclusive image from the film ahead of its Prime Video debut on January 16, 2025. The image captures a poignant moment of closeness between Charles and Robles during a wrestling match. In it, while there’s a hint of concern in Cheadle’s eyes, his expression also conveys a strong desire for his protégé to succeed.
Don Cheadle’s performance plays a crucial role in driving “Unstoppable”. Although the emotional heart of the movie, which is based on Robles’ 2012 book of the same name, lies in the bond between the lead character and his mother, it’s clear from this image that Robles’ journey on the Arizona State Wrestling team would have been very different without the support of Cheadle’s character. The intensity that the Oscar-nominated actor brings to the role helps to enhance both the triumphant and challenging moments of Robles’ path to championship. Cheadle received an Oscar nomination in 2005 for his leading role in “Hotel Rwanda”.
So far in the 2024 – 2025 awards season, Cheadle’s performance in the movie hasn’t been recognized by major awards bodies. He wasn’t nominated at the 2025 Golden Globes or the Critics Choice Awards. However, there’s still a slim chance he could receive an Academy Award nomination in January. While the movie hasn’t made as big of a splash as some others featuring prominent male supporting performances like “A Real Pain” and “Gladiator II”, Cheadle’s dedication to his role is likely to contribute to the movie’s success once it arrives on Prime Video.
“Unstoppable” has the potential to make a significant mark in the sports drama genre. Despite not having reached a wide audience yet, its early positive reviews suggest it could quickly join the ranks of classic inspiring sports dramas. From “Rudy” to “The Boys in the Boat”, the genre has numerous notable entries, and the intensity demonstrated by the cast, as seen in this image where both Cheadle and Jerome are fully immersed in the moment, will probably help propel it to greater acclaim.
