Disney’s live-action adaptation of “Snow White” has dropped an international trailer that offers fresh insights into the story of Snow White and the Evil Queen. Directed by Mark Webb and starring Rachel Zegler, Gal Gadot, Andrew Burnup, and others, the film presents a new narrative angle.
In this version, Snow White gets her name as part of a “New Origin” story. When she was just a baby, she survived a fierce snowstorm, which led the king and queen to name her Snow White, as a reminder of her remarkable tenacity and vitality. However, the idyllic and harmonious life of the kingdom takes a dark turn with the arrival of the evil Queen.
The iconic question, “Who is the most beautiful person in the world?” is posed, and while the magic mirror usually plays a role in “deceiving” the evil queen with responses like “Your Majesty’s beauty is famous”, many netizens think it didn’t deceive this time. Still, for the sake of advancing the plot, it says in the preview, “but I see a flawless girl now.” The trailer also delves deeper into Snow White’s life as she escapes into the enchanted forest with the seven dwarfs and various animals.
What’s notable is that the film incorporates modern values. Here, the princess isn’t reliant on the prince’s rescue. Instead, she takes on a brave, fearless, and leadership role, highlighting the independent and evolving nature of women.
The movie is based on the classic fairy tale and the 1937 animated film of the same name. In the original story, young Snow White flees the castle after her stepmother, the Evil Queen, becomes jealous of her beauty and orders hunters to kill her. The hunters fail in their task, and Snow White finds refuge in a hut belonging to the seven dwarfs. When the evil Queen discovers that Snow White is alive, she visits the cottage and tricks her into eating a poisoned apple. Snow White is then awakened by the prince’s kiss of true love.
With a hefty production budget of $260 million, “Snow White” is set to be released in North America on March 21, 2025, and it looks to bring a contemporary spin to a beloved fairy tale classic.
