Sofia Carson Updates on Potential ‘Purple Hearts’ Sequel

by Barbara Miller

Sofia Carson, while promoting her new Netflix movie “Carry-On”, has shed some light on the possibility of a sequel to one of the most talked-about romantic dramas on Netflix in 2022. Having risen to prominence with her breakthrough roles in Disney’s “Descendants” movies and achieving viral success with her previous Netflix romance, Carson is steadily solidifying her place in the entertainment industry. She’s not only an accomplished performer but also a producer, constantly broadening her career horizons with diverse and exciting new projects.

Carson’s current project is her role as Nora in the new Netflix action-thriller “Carry-On”, where she stars alongside Taron Egerton and Jason Bateman. Additionally, she has two upcoming Netflix projects in the pipeline: “The Life List”, based on the book by Lori Nelson Spielman, and “My Oxford Year”, which is adapted from Julia Whelan’s novel. She also has a non-Netflix movie, “Last Night at The Lobster”, directed by Wagner Moura, in the works. Despite her busy schedule with numerous upcoming endeavors, the question of a sequel to her controversial 2022 romance movie remains on fans’ minds.

The movie in question is “Purple Hearts”, in which Carson was both the executive producer and the star. It premiered in 2022 and became a huge hit for Netflix, captivating audiences with the story of Cassie, a struggling singer, and Luke, a troubled Marine. They enter into a marriage of convenience for military benefits but then develop a genuine and unlikely romance when faced with tragedy. While it was massively successful, spending six weeks in Netflix’s Top 10 and ranking as the third most-watched movie of 2022, “Purple Hearts” also stirred up debates due to its portrayal of political and cultural themes, which led to some concerns regarding a potential sequel.

During an interview, Carson was asked about the prospects of a “Purple Hearts” sequel and whether she was interested in making it happen. Although she didn’t confirm that a follow-up was definitely in the works, she did reveal that there have been conversations about it. Here’s what she said:

“There are conversations. That’s all I’ll say.

I love Cassie, and I loved making this film, and I feel so passionate and so protective of it. So I’m very protective of how and if the sequel happens. But it’s extraordinary that I get asked so much about it. Even just that is a gift. I know fans really loved it.”

What this means for the “Purple Hearts” sequel is that it’s all about waiting for the right story. Carson’s cautious and protective stance shows her awareness of the film’s impact on its audience and the significance of crafting a narrative that does justice to the original. “Purple Hearts” is based on a 2017 standalone novel by Tess Wakefield, which means creating a sequel would require constructing a new narrative rather than simply continuing from where the book left off. Therefore, any sequel would need to be carefully considered to maintain the emotional depth and authenticity that drew viewers in initially, while also avoiding feeling like a forced addition.

However, the possibility of a sequel also presents exciting opportunities to further explore Cassie and Luke’s evolving relationship. The ending of “Purple Hearts” was hopeful yet left things somewhat open-ended, setting the stage for more exploration. A potential sequel could focus on how they navigate life after the events of the first film, perhaps delving into Cassie’s growing music career and Luke’s reintegration into civilian life. With fans eagerly anticipating a sequel, Carson’s approach indicates a commitment to creating a follow-up that builds on the essence of the original rather than just cashing in on its popularity.
