‘Kraven The Hunter’ Sees Sharp Box Office Drop in Second Week

by Barbara Miller

Kraven the Hunter has been making waves in the Sony Spider-Verse, though not in the positive manner Sony had envisioned. With Aaron Taylor-Johnson in the titular role, the film had a lackluster domestic debut, raking in just $11 million. This figure is even lower than the previous lowest opening for a Sony Marvel movie. Earlier in 2024, Madame Web opened with a rather dismal $15.4 million, yet it still managed to outperform Kraven. Taylor-Johnson’s latest venture faced tough competition as both Moana 2 and Wicked, despite being in their third and fourth weekends respectively, earned more than double the profits of Kraven.

The situation didn’t improve in its second weekend.  Kraven endured a significant -72% decline in ticket sales. This slump makes it highly unlikely that the film will recoup its budget. Kraven had a production cost of around $120 million, and as of Sunday, December 22, its domestic box office total stands at approximately $17.4 million. Globally, it has accumulated $42.8 million. With popular releases like Sonic the Hedgehog 3 performing strongly as the Christmas season approaches, Kraven is unlikely to regain any traction.

What Kraven The Hunter’s box office decline implies is quite telling. Currently on its 10th day of release with around $17.4 million, it pales in comparison to other Sony Marvel films. For instance, Madame Web had reached $28 million by its 10th day, and Morbius had amassed $57 million in the same period. The Venom trilogy fared far better than the rest on this front, with $142 million, $141 million, and $89 million respectively by each franchise entry’s 10th day in theaters. Consequently, it’s highly improbable that Kraven will achieve financial success or break even.

Beyond its underwhelming numbers when stacked against other Sony Marvel movies, Kraven is also being overshadowed by other films at the box office currently. It was surpassed by new releases such as Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Mufasa, among others. Domestically, it has dropped to 7th place, trailing behind previous releases like Wicked, Moana, and Gladiator II.

Kraven The Hunter’s box office decline is while the results are disappointing, they’re not entirely unexpected. Sony’s approach of creating Spider-Man-related films without the actual presence of Spider-Man has been yielding diminishing returns, so it’s hardly a shock that this latest installment in the franchise is performing so poorly. Moreover, the fact that it’s rated R likely contributed to its struggles.

Regardless of whether making Kraven rated R was a good decision or not, its December release date was probably a hindrance. It was surrounded by more family-friendly releases during the holiday season, and facing stiff competition from another rated R, adult-oriented film like Gladiator II certainly didn’t help its cause. All in all, Kraven is concluding the current slate of Sony Marvel films on a rather lackluster note.
