The long-awaited return of “The Night Manager” is now set for 2025. The BBC One show, which also aired on AMC in the US, first premiered back in 2016. It follows the story of Jonathan Pine (Tom Hiddleston), a British ex-soldier turned hotel manager in Cairo who gets recruited for an undercover mission to take down arms dealer Richard Roper (Hugh Laurie). In April 2024, fans were delighted to hear that both season 2 and season 3 of “The Night Manager” had been renewed simultaneously as a co-production between the BBC and Amazon, with Hiddleston set to reprise his role.
The BBC has confirmed that “The Night Manager” season 2 will premiere on BBC iPlayer and BBC One in 2025. While the specific date remains under wraps for now, it’s also been announced that Olivia Colman and Alistair Petrie will be back, reprising their roles as Foreign Office task force manager Angela Burr and Roper’s associate Lord Sandy Langbourne respectively. Here’s the synopsis of the new season:
“The Night Manager will pick up with everyone’s favorite spy, Jonathan Pine (Tom Hiddleston), eight years after the explosive finale of season one.”
What this means for “The Night Manager” is that its release timeline has become much clearer. Although the exact month of the premiere is yet to be disclosed, knowing that the show will return in 2025 helps fans understand the length of the hiatus between seasons. The show was in production earlier this year, as evidenced by an October 2024 Instagram post from Camila Morrone, who joined the series as Roxana Bolaños. This suggests it could be ready to air sometime in the first half of the year. But even if it doesn’t premiere until December, the wait between seasons won’t exceed nine years.
The cast for “The Night Manager” season 2 is also expanding, with Diego Calva from “Babylon” and Indira Varma from “Doctor Who” joining the lineup.
At present, the premiere date for season 3 is still unknown. However, the fact that both seasons were renewed simultaneously implies that the wait time between them will likely be shorter. Compared to other modern series, like Hiddleston’s “Loki” in the Marvel Cinematic Universe which can have hiatuses of two or three years, this still represents a quicker turnaround than the gap between the first two seasons of “The Night Manager”.
The announcement of “The Night Manager” season 2’s release has big shoes to fill. Despite the hiatus coming to an end before a full decade has passed, the show has a lot to live up to. When it first premiered, it was a huge success, boasting a Certified Fresh score of 91% on Rotten Tomatoes and an almost equally impressive 88% audience score. It was also nominated for 12 Emmys and won two (for Music Composition and Directing). So, there’s significant pressure on the new season to match the achievements of season 1.
