Nakajima Tetsuya, renowned for works like “Confession”, “Shimoji Story”, and “Desire”, is set to release his latest film also titled “Confession” (には confessional を). The movie stars Hidetoshi Nishijima and marks his first collaboration with Mitsushima Hikaru. It also features an ensemble cast including Kuroki Hana, Gukuro Miyazaki, Yuki Shimazaki, Shinya Tsukamoto, Tsurutaro Kataoka, Jiro Sato, and Hiroji Tsukushima, among others.
The recently released poster shows an adult’s hand gently touching a child’s extremely curved fingers, setting a poignant tone. Adapted from the novel of the same name by Da Hai Wensan, the film delves into the bond between parents and children through the lens of severely disabled children. It tells the story of an adult who has endured severe trauma in the past and discovers a way to live a fulfilling life in the present upon encountering a “thin little life” that is tenaciously striving to survive.
In the film, Nishijima Hidetoshi plays a man estranged from his family, while Mitsushima Hikaru portrays Satoko, who has been abandoned by her daughter. Kuroki Hana takes on the role of Minhui, who doesn’t love her children, and Gukuro Miyazaki plays Mingye, who treats children as survival food. Shibataki Yuji plays a child who sacrifices everything for another child, and Sato Erao plays Mimoto, who shows little interest in others.
Director Tetsuya Nakajima shared that when he read the novel around 20 years ago, he immediately thought, “I can make a movie that touches the emotions of the audience.” He also mentioned that it was challenging to obtain support when he first wrote the script, but after 15 years of meticulous planning, he has completed a moving film that ventures into new creative territory. With a unique perspective and detailed direction, it portrays “the story of adults who are deeply hurt by the past and are desperately trying to survive in the present and find a way forward in life.”
“Confession” is slated for release in Japan in June 2025, and it’s sure to draw attention with its compelling premise and talented cast.
