In the highly – anticipated “Captain America: Brave New World”, Anthony Mackie, who portrays Sam Wilson/Captain America, has revealed the in – depth process he undertakes to fully embody his character. His journey with the role dates back over a decade to 2014’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”, and has seen a significant transformation as Sam transitioned into the iconic Captain America.
During an interview, Mackie detailed his unique three – step approach to character development. For every role, he selects a piece of art that encapsulates the genre, story, and the character’s background. He also chooses a song that resonates emotionally with the essence he aims to capture. And finally, he picks a food, emphasizing that eating is a universal aspect of life. The Russo Brothers played a crucial part in his song selection. When Mackie was first cast, they suggested “Trouble Man”, and after some deliberation, the Marvin Gaye song was chosen. Mackie listens to it daily on his way to work, and it’s notable that Sam recommends this song to Steve Rogers in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”.
Mackie further shared the art and food that inspired his take on Captain America. He bought a piece by Romare Bearden, believing it perfectly represented Sam Wilson’s evolution as Captain America. Deciding on the food was more challenging. He visited a local grocery store in New Orleans, where an old – timer made the best boudin. Mackie requested a “Captain America boudin”, and thus, this Cajun staple became part of his character – building. These elements – the boudin, Bearden’s art, and “Trouble Man” – all contribute to Mackie’s portrayal. His choices offer a fascinating look into how actors create a multi – dimensional character. The boudin ties to Sam’s and Mackie’s Louisiana roots, Bearden’s art reflects relevant cultural aspects, and the song’s lyrics mirror Sam’s resilient mindset. This insight showcases Mackie’s dedication to bringing authenticity to the role of Captain America.
