Moana 2 has achieved a remarkable feat, officially crossing the $1 – billion mark at the global box office. This accomplishment firmly cements its position as one of the highest – grossing films of 2024. The animated sequel, which made its debut on Thanksgiving 2024, continues the adventures of Moana, voiced by Auli’i Cravalho. In the movie, Moana sets sail on the perilous seas of Oceania following an unexpected summons from her ancestors. The voice cast of Moana 2 is star – studded, featuring talents like Dwayne Johnson, Hualālai Chung, David Fane, and Rose Matafeo.
Moana 2’s worldwide box – office earnings have now exceeded $1 billion. Initially, the sequel was envisioned as a streaming – exclusive series for Disney+. However, the decision was made to shift it to a theatrical release, and this has proven to be an astute move. Reaching the $1 – billion milestone places Moana 2 as the third – highest – grossing Disney film of the year, trailing only Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine. Its Thanksgiving release was also record – breaking, opening with $225 million, surpassing the previous record of $125 million held by Frozen II.
The $1 – billion achievement of Moana 2 is a significant milestone. It far outstrips the original Moana’s $680 – million earnings in 2016. The sequel’s wider appeal across global markets, especially in the United States, China, and Europe, contributed to this success. The decision to release it theatrically rather than solely on Disney+ was a key factor in its box – office triumph. When compared to other 2024 releases, Moana 2 stands out. It has outperformed movies like Mufasa: The Lion King, which grossed $542.3 million globally, Wicked with $708.6 million, and Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which recently surpassed its previous sequel’s earnings to reach $419.9 million. Now, Moana 2 joins the ranks of other animated blockbusters like The Lion King (2019) and The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023) that have crossed the billion – dollar mark.
