Horror enthusiasts are in for a twisted take on a classic cartoon icon in the upcoming film Shiver Me Timbers, where Popeye the Sailor Man undergoes a terrifying transformation into a relentless killing machine. The newly released trailer promises plenty of thrills, as this once-friendly spinach-eating character embarks on a bloody rampage following a catastrophic encounter with a meteor.
Shiver Me Timbers, produced by Alpake Entertainment, takes place in Northern California during the summer of 1986. The film’s official synopsis reveals a group of friends, including Olive Oyl and her brother Castor, embarking on a camping trip to witness the rare meteor shower that accompanies Halley’s Comet. However, the serene evening of stargazing quickly descends into chaos when one of the comet’s meteors transforms Popeye into a bloodthirsty monster.
The film’s production company, Alpake Entertainment, is known for its bold horror movies and has made a name for itself with its genre-defying reimaginings. Shiver Me Timbers is the latest in a string of Popeye-inspired horror flicks, following Popeye’s Revenge and Popeye the Slayer Man, both scheduled for release in 2025.
A Horrific Take on Popeye’s Legacy
In Shiver Me Timbers, Popeye’s familiar characteristics are twisted into something far darker. Rather than his classic “I yam what I yam” mantra, the sailor man becomes an unstoppable force of terror. While fans of the original Popeye cartoons will recognize the names of some key characters, the absence of fan favorites like Swee’Pea, Wimpy, and Bluto/Brutus in the cast is notable. This omission could leave some fans wondering if there are hidden references to these characters among the film’s ensemble.
The central figures in the new horror-comedy are Olive Oyl, played by Amy Mackie, and her brother Castor, portrayed by Brendan Nelson. Their roles shift away from the traditional romantic pairing with Popeye, as Olive finds herself facing a very different, monstrous version of her famous beau. Other characters, such as Cylinda (Niamh Parrington) and Lizzy (Leona Roberts), also appear, with Lizzy possibly nodding to Bluto’s wife from the Popeye and Son cartoon series.
One curious character inclusion is Homeless George (Paul Dewdney), who seems to be a live-action counterpart to George W. Geezil from the Popeye universe. However, Popeye’s frightening metamorphosis into Monster Popeye, played by Anthony Greer, means that none of his old friends are likely to be on his side in this twisted retelling.
An 80s-Inspired Slasher Tribute
Filmmaker Paul Stephen Mann’s Shiver Me Timbers is unmistakably influenced by the slasher genre, particularly the iconic films of the 1980s. The film is described as a gritty, gory homage filled with violence, sex, and drugs, drawing inspiration from cult horror classics. Mann even references the beloved Evil Dead franchise, with a character in the trailer delivering a memorable line from Army of Darkness (1992), “Gimmie some sugar, baby,” paying tribute to Bruce Campbell’s iconic Ash Williams.
As Shiver Me Timbers prepares for its April 2025 release, fans can still enjoy the Popeye films of yore. Notably, the 1980 live-action adaptation starring Robin Williams and Shelley Duvall celebrates its 45th anniversary this December and is available for streaming on Pluto TV. Additionally, NASA reports that Halley’s Comet won’t be visible from Earth again until 2061, further cementing the film’s timely connection to this celestial event.
In the meantime, it remains to be seen if Shiver Me Timbers will become a standout in the annals of horror cinema, but its fresh take on Popeye is already making waves among fans and critics alike.
