‘Máxima’ : The Road to the Dutch Throne

by Barbara

A new six-part series, Máxima, now airing in Australia on SBS, delves into the compelling journey of Queen Máxima of the Netherlands—from her early life in Argentina to her high-profile engagement to King Willem-Alexander. The drama unfolds the challenges, cultural clashes, and media scrutiny that accompanied the royal romance.

The series paints a picture of Máxima as a strong, independent woman who navigates the complexities of marrying into European royalty. The narrative shifts between flashbacks of Máxima’s childhood in Buenos Aires and her blossoming relationship with Willem-Alexander in 1999.

The Royal Love Story

Affectionately calling each other “Alex” and “Cookie,” the royal couple’s early moments are captured with warmth and humor. In the show, Máxima, a skilled economist, and Willem-Alexander enjoy moments of normalcy, including sneaking into a New York cinema, disguised under baseball caps and dark wigs, to enjoy popcorn. These intimate, unguarded moments offer a glimpse into their connection amidst the constant shadow of security and media attention.

However, the fairy tale romance is soon overshadowed by scandal. As the press uncovers the controversial past of Máxima’s father, Jorge Zorreguieta—who was involved in Argentina’s military dictatorship—her reputation comes under attack. Dubbed the “daughter of a war criminal,” the relentless media coverage places strain on the relationship, leading to significant tension within the royal family.

Struggles and Sacrifices

The series captures the couple’s tumultuous journey, with the Dutch Parliament even requiring approval for Willem-Alexander to remain in line for the throne should he proceed with his marriage to Máxima. Despite the challenges, their love endures, with Máxima eventually marrying Willem-Alexander in 2002, though her father was not permitted to attend the wedding due to his controversial past.

Casting and Production Insights

The series was announced in February 2022, based on Marcia Luyten’s 2022 book Máxima Zorreguieta: Motherland. Argentine actress Delfina Chaves was selected to portray Máxima, with Dutch actor Martijn Lakemeier cast as Willem-Alexander. The production team sought an actress who could capture not only Máxima’s physical resemblance but also her intelligence, confidence, and vulnerability.

Producer Rachel van Bommel emphasized the responsibility of portraying a living person, noting that Máxima’s public persona demands constant attention: “She’s someone you can’t help but look at when she enters a room.”

A Royal Perspective

Despite the show’s respectful approach, neither Queen Máxima nor King Willem-Alexander have offered feedback on the series. Actor Martijn Lakemeier acknowledged that while the couple likely avoids watching portrayals of their lives, the production focuses on the universal themes of love and perseverance.

Delfina Chaves shared that Máxima had expressed her respect for the freedom of speech and, while not seeking an external retelling of her life, acknowledged the sacrifices and struggles she endured to make her fairytale romance a reality.

As the series unfolds, it becomes clear that Máxima’s journey to the Dutch throne was far from simple. It is a story of love, sacrifice, and overcoming societal expectations, with a royal title being the least of the obstacles they had to face.
