Actor Emile Hirsch, known for his role in The Autopsy of Jane Doe, is set to lead The Condemnation, a supernatural thriller based on real-life events. Hirsch will portray an aspiring journalist assigned by a prestigious newspaper to investigate the haunted Casa Matusita, a notorious house in Lima, Peru, infamous for its chilling history of ghost sightings, murders, suicides, and a tragic massacre.
The journalist and his wife move into the house as part of their investigation. However, their stay soon turns into a terrifying ordeal, with increasingly bizarre and dangerous occurrences forcing them to seek the help of a local priest with a dark connection to the house.
The film is scheduled to begin production in April under the direction of Peruvian-American filmmaker Catherine C. Pirotta, who also wrote the screenplay. Luminosity Pictures’ Daniel Diamond, whose credits include Winchester and Tekken, will produce the project alongside Brad Epstein (About a Boy, Dan in Real Life) and Farouk Hadef.
Diamond commented on the appeal of the project, stating, “Elevated genre movies that are not only very scary but also character-driven and based on phenomenal actual events are always appealing to a broad worldwide audience.”
Pirotta praised Hirsch’s versatility, saying, “Emile Hirsch is one of the most talented and engaging actors of his generation. His body of work includes wonderfully diverse and complicated characters, which he has portrayed in transformative ways, and I am excited to be working with him to bring this story to life.”
Luminosity Pictures will present the film to international buyers at the European Film Market in Berlin.
Casa Matusita is a real-life paranormal hotspot in Lima, Peru, with urban legends surrounding it dating back to the mid-18th century.
