Lionsgate has unveiled a restored director’s cut of Peter Bogdanovich’s final film, Squirrels to the Nuts, now available on digital platforms. The film, originally released in 2014 under the title She’s Funny That Way, showcases Bogdanovich’s directorial vision and his collaboration with Louise Stratten on the screenplay.
The film features an ensemble cast including Owen Wilson, Imogen Poots, Kathryn Hahn, Cybill Shepherd, Austin Pendleton, Will Forte, Joanna Lumley, and Richard Lewis. Jennifer Aniston and Rhys Ifans make appearances, alongside cameos from Graydon Carter, Colleen Camp, and George Morfogen.
“Peter Bogdanovich was one of the most accomplished filmmakers of his generation, as well as a respected writer, actor, producer, and film historian,” said Ron Schwartz, Chief Operating Officer of Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group, in a statement. “At Lionsgate, we take pride in our history of working with acclaimed filmmakers, and we are thrilled to present the final film from one of the greats. For film enthusiasts, this restored director’s cut of Squirrels to the Nuts is the version Peter Bogdanovich always intended, now available across all digital platforms.”
A version of the director’s cut was previously shown at the Museum of Modern Art in 2022. The restoration was led by Frank Marshall and Adria Petty, with contributions from Bogdanovich’s family.
Peter Bogdanovich, renowned for his iconic films The Last Picture Show and Paper Moon, passed away in 2022 at the age of 82. His former wife and producer of Squirrels to the Nuts, Louise Stratten, revealed that the director was never satisfied with the original theatrical release. “We would watch it and say, ‘There’s a better movie there,’” Stratten said in a statement, reflecting the filmmaker’s desire for a more complete version of his final work.
