Steven Spielberg is making a return to the science fiction genre with an untitled event movie, reportedly focused on UFOs. Universal Pictures has recently updated the release date, shifting the film’s premiere from May 15, 2026, to June 12, 2026.
The acclaimed director will collaborate once again with screenwriter David Koepp, best known for his work on Jurassic Park, to bring the project to life. The film boasts a star-studded cast, including Emily Blunt (A Quiet Place), Josh O’Connor (Challengers), Colman Domingo (Sing Sing), Colin Firth (The King’s Speech), and Eve Hewson (Bad Sisters).
Notably, June 12, 2026, will also see the release of Scary Movie 6, a new entry in the parody franchise from the Wayans Brothers, set to hit theaters under Paramount.
Spielberg, a long-time pioneer of extraterrestrial-themed cinema, has already made a mark in the genre with iconic films like Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982). His return to alien encounters continued in 2005 with his adaptation of H.G. Wells’ War of the Worlds. More recently, his production company, Amblin Entertainment, produced the Netflix docuseries Encounters, which dives into real-life stories of human interactions with otherworldly phenomena. The series is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
This new untitled UFO-centered project is being developed by Amblin Entertainment and Universal Pictures. Further details about the film’s plot and its release are expected soon.
