Russo Brothers Tease Marvel Films and Cameos

by Barbara

At the world premiere of Netflix’s The Electric State at The Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood, renowned filmmakers Joe and Anthony Russo provided fresh insights into their highly anticipated Marvel projects, Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, slated for release in 2026 and 2027, respectively.

Joe Russo shared an update on the two films, revealing that production would take place in London and the movies would be shot in rapid succession. “It’s a lot of work again, we may or may not survive, we’ll see,” he joked. Despite the grueling schedule, Russo expressed excitement about the projects. “We’ve found a way into the story that we think is gonna be challenging for audiences, it’s challenging for us to execute. And it’s really exciting for us, it gets us out of bed to do it.”

When asked whether the upcoming Avengers films would include appearances from characters within the X-Men universe or the fan-favorite Deadpool, Russo offered a cryptic response. “Who knows? I don’t know. I don’t know who we’re gonna see. I still don’t know,” he said.

Anthony Russo, with his characteristic humor, added a playful twist to the speculation. “If you close your eyes and use your imagination, you can see anyone you want,” he quipped. “Whoever tickles your fancy.”

Chris Pratt, who stars in The Electric State and is known for his role in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, was also asked about the possibility of a cameo in the new Marvel films. The actor teased fans by acknowledging their eagerness, stating, “I know [fans] would be thrilled to see my return.”

Joe Russo further teased the idea of unexpected Marvel cameos, stating, “Anybody in the Marvel bag could show up in this movie.”

The Russo Brothers have long been integral to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, having directed some of its most iconic films, including Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Reflecting on the journey to their latest projects, Joe Russo explained that their approach to continuing the saga post-Endgame took time to come to fruition. “We ended up stumbling upon an idea that activated all of us,” said Anthony Russo. “You couldn’t see it coming until it came, and once it came it was like, ‘Well, that’s a story we need to tell.’”

The Russo duo is reuniting with screenwriter Steven McFeely, who collaborated with Christopher Markus on the scripts for their previous Marvel films.

In a surprising twist, it was announced last year at Comic-Con that Robert Downey Jr. would reprise his role in the franchise, but this time as the villain Doctor Doom, following the heroic death of his character, Iron Man, in Endgame.

As for The Electric State, which is set to premiere on Netflix on March 14, it is based on Simon Stålenhag’s sci-fi graphic novel. The film follows Millie Bobby Brown, who stars as a young woman searching for her missing brother in a retro-futuristic 1990s America. She is accompanied by a robot sent by her brother. The cast also includes Ke Huy Quan, Stanley Tucci, Giancarlo Esposito, and Pratt, adding further excitement for this genre-defying adventure.
