‘The Electric State’: Final Trailer Drops Ahead of Netflix Premiere

by Barbara

Netflix has released the final trailer for The Electric State, an eagerly awaited adaptation of Simon Stålenhag’s post-apocalyptic graphic novel, directed by Joe and Anthony Russo. The film, which stars Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt, is set in an alternate version of the 1990s where humans and sentient robots once coexisted until a mysterious uprising shattered that peace.

In the film, Brown plays Michelle, an orphaned teenager navigating a dangerous world where robots, once integral to society, are now exiled. Her journey takes a dramatic turn when she discovers that a robot named Cosmo, who she encounters on her travels, is actually being controlled by her younger brother, Christopher, whom she believed to be dead. Determined to reunite with her brother, Michelle embarks on a cross-country road trip through the American Southwest, joined by Keats (Pratt), a smuggler with a robot sidekick named Herman (voiced by Anthony Mackie). Together, they venture into the Exclusion Zone, a desolate desert area where the robots are hiding.

“It’s an action-adventure comedy, but also very poignant with intense themes,” said Joe Russo in a recent interview. “It’s a big, commercially appealing film, but we hope it also provides a rich storytelling experience, touching on deeper subjects, much like we did in our work with Marvel.”

Anthony Russo added, “Millie’s character, who has lost her family in the war, embarks on a quest to find her brother. Along the way, she meets Chris Pratt’s character, and together they form a partnership that leads them through the dangerous desert terrain.”

Produced by the Russos through their AGBO banner, The Electric State was adapted from a script written by frequent collaborators Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. The film’s release is highly anticipated, especially given the excitement surrounding its theatrical deal with Universal, which will offer audiences a chance to experience the film in theaters before its Netflix debut.

“We’re thrilled to have this deal with Universal for a theatrical release,” said the Russos. “It’s great news for filmmakers and audiences alike, marking a positive shift as the theatrical market begins to return with the rollout of vaccines.”

The Russos also praised the story’s focus on strong female characters. “All the major characters, except for one supporting role, are women, which is something we’re really proud of,” added Markus.

The Electric State will premiere on Netflix on March 14.
