A24 has announced that Celine Song’s highly anticipated film Materialists will hit theaters nationwide on June 13. The film, which stars Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal, follows a young New York City matchmaker caught between the allure of her perfect match and the complications of an imperfect ex.
Song, who both wrote and directed the film, also serves as a producer alongside David Hinojosa of 2AM and Killer Films.
The announcement comes on the heels of Song’s successful 2023 romance Past Lives, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and earned critical acclaim. The film, which starred Greta Lee and Tee Yoo, centers on the reunion of two childhood friends, Nora and Hae Sung, after years of separation, sparking a reflective exploration of love and destiny. Past Lives grossed $11.3 million domestically and over $42 million globally.
A24 has set aside June 13 for the release of Materialists, which will also face competition that weekend from an untitled theatrical release from Shudder and the live-action adaptation of DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon, which is being distributed by Universal.
In addition to Materialists, A24 is preparing for three major releases in March: the horror-comedy Opus starring John Malkovich and Ayo Edebiri (March 14), and Death of a Unicorn, starring Jenna Ortega and Paul Rudd, which will world premiere at SXSW on March 28.
