Netflix has quickly renewed its basketball-themed comedy Running Point for a second season, making it one of the streamer’s fastest renewals for a first-year series. The announcement came just a week after the show’s February 27 release and shortly after Netflix canceled its two-season drama The Recruit.
Running Point, which stars Kate Hudson, achieved a remarkable debut with 9.3 million views in its opening weekend, ranking among the Top 10 in 83 countries worldwide. As Running Point secures its future, No Good Deed, another freshman comedy series, is still awaiting a decision about its fate, despite being three months past its premiere.
“We are so thrilled to be able to deliver a Season 2 of Running Point to the fans of the show,” co-creator and executive producer Mindy Kaling shared with Tudum. “We still cannot believe the response from audiences – thank you to everyone who has watched!”
Set against the backdrop of professional basketball, Running Point centers on Isla Gordon (Kate Hudson), who is appointed president of the Los Angeles Waves, one of the most iconic teams in the league. Inspired by the real-life dynamics of the LA Lakers and its president Jeanie Buss, the series explores Isla’s journey as she works to prove herself in a male-dominated environment after a family scandal forces her brother’s resignation. Faced with skepticism from her brothers, the board, and the wider sports community, Isla must navigate the pressures of leadership and show that she’s the right person for the job.
The first season of Running Point consists of 10 episodes and features a star-studded cast including Brenda Song, Drew Tarver, Scott MacArthur, Fabrizio Guido, Toby Sandeman, Chet Hanks, Jay Ellis, Max Greenfield, and Justin Theroux. The series is produced by Mindy Kaling’s Kaling International in partnership with Warner Bros. Television. Kaling, Ike Barinholtz, and David Stassen serve as writers and executive producers, with Stassen also acting as the showrunner. Howard Klein, Jeanie Buss, and Linda Rambis also executive produce.
