The world of public domain horror continues to expand with The Dark Domain: Mickey vs. Winnie, a film that pits two of pop culture’s most beloved characters against each other in a terrifying new light. Directed by Glenn Douglas Packard (known for Pitchfork), this chilling movie marks a first for the genre, placing the childhood icons Mickey Mouse and Winnie the Pooh in a deadly showdown. The official trailer for the film was debuted today, generating buzz for its dark take on these familiar characters.
Set in the 1920s, the film follows two convicts who escape into a cursed forest, only to be consumed by its depths. Fast forward a century, and a group of thrill-seeking friends unknowingly arrives at the same eerie woods for a weekend getaway at an Airbnb. Their adventure quickly turns into a nightmare when the convicts, now twisted into monstrous versions of Mickey Mouse and Winnie the Pooh, emerge from the darkness to terrorize them. The friends find themselves fighting for their lives in a brutal battle of survival against these horrific, mutated childhood figures.
The cursed forest becomes the setting for a gruesome spectacle, where Mickey and Winnie clash in a bloody frenzy, leaving behind a grisly tableau of carnage. The violent conflict is a terrifying reflection of the curse’s sinister power over the woods.
In the film, “Dark Mickey” is portrayed by Daniel Wilkinson, while “Dark Winnie” is played by Chris Boudreaux. Packard shared his excitement about bringing these iconic characters into a new, darker universe. “I love that we can take these iconic childhood characters from A.A. Milne’s original Winnie-the-Pooh and the 1928 Steamboat Willie version of Mickey and create a whole new wicked universe,” Packard said in a recent statement. “Our film is like the Upside Down World, with these public domain icons getting into a horror smackdown akin to Freddy vs. Jason.”
With its unique premise and a dark twist on childhood nostalgia, The Dark Domain: Mickey vs. Winnie is poised to be a standout in the realm of horror. The film is expected to attract fans of both horror and classic animation, bringing them face to face with a terrifying new reality.
