Juno Films has released the official trailer for That They May Face the Rising Sun, an indie Irish drama directed by veteran filmmaker Pat Collins. Based on the acclaimed novel by John McGahern, the film offers a poignant depiction of life in a rural Irish community during the 1980s.
The film, which first premiered at the 2023 London Film Festival, will now make its way to the United States with a release scheduled for April 11, 2025. It had previously screened in the UK and is expected to resonate with audiences drawn to slow, meditative storytelling and the beauty of nature.
That They May Face the Rising Sun follows Joe and Kate Ruttledge, who return from London to live in a lakeside village near Joe’s childhood home. The film unfolds over the course of a year, with the passing seasons serving as the backdrop to a drama that explores the couple’s integration into the tight-knit community. Through the rhythms of everyday life—work, play, and seasonal changes—the characters’ personal stories are told in a calm, introspective manner, highlighting the joys and struggles of rural existence.
The film stars Anna Bederke, Barry Ward, Lalor Roddy, Ruth McCabe, and Sean McGinley. It is visually stunning, capturing the serene beauty of the Irish countryside, making it a calming and wholesome cinematic experience. Directed by Pat Collins, known for his previous works such as Abbas Kiarostami: The Art of Living and Tim Robinson: Connemara, the film adapts McGahern’s final novel to the screen.
The screenplay, penned by Eamon Little and Collins, stays true to McGahern’s sensitive portrayal of life in rural Ireland, while exploring themes of community, nature, and human connection. Produced by Brendan J. Byrne and Tina O’Reilly, the film is set to be released in select US theaters and on VOD.
For those seeking a peaceful yet emotionally engaging film, That They May Face the Rising Sun promises a beautiful and reflective cinematic journey.
