The official website for the live-action adaptation of The Silent Service, based on Kaiji Kawaguchi’s acclaimed political-military manga, has unveiled a teaser trailer and visual for the upcoming second theatrical film, subtitled Hokkyokukai Daikaisen (translated as The Great Sea Battle of the Arctic Ocean).

The newly released trailer showcases the nuclear submarine Yamato navigating the frigid waters of the Arctic Ocean, setting the stage for a gripping political and military drama. Amidst the tensions, Japan’s House of Representatives election is about to commence, building a sense of urgency and impending conflict. The teaser concludes with Shiro Kaieda, the captain of the Yamato, portrayed by Takao Osawa, coldly muttering the words, “Wake up.”

As Amazon Studios’ first Japanese theatrical film, the initial live-action project premiered in Japan on September 29, 2023, and earned 1.37 billion yen (approximately 9.02 million USD) from its domestic release. This was followed by an eight-episode web drama series titled The Silent Service Season One: The Battle of Tokyo Bay, which debuted on Amazon Prime Video in February 2024.

The sequel film, set to focus on the “Great Sea Battle of the Arctic Ocean” and the “Yamato Election” episode, draws inspiration from a TV special aired during the original manga’s serialization. The second film’s theatrical screenings are scheduled to begin on September 26, 2025, in Japan.

Film Synopsis (Translated)

In the cold, deep northern waters, the Yamato submarine submerges with Mozart’s music echoing in the background. The nuclear-powered vessel, known as the “Great and Powerful Peace,” previously overwhelmed the U.S. Seventh Fleet during the Battle of Tokyo Bay and now sets its course for New York. As the submarine nears the Bering Strait, the border between the U.S. and Russia, a new threat emerges—an advanced U.S. submarine, far superior to Yamato, lurks behind, dispatched by President Bennett himself with the mission to “Sink the nuclear terrorist Yamato.”

Meanwhile, Japan’s House of Representatives election is underway, with Prime Minister Takegami publicly declaring his support for Yamato. The fate of both the submarine and the political future of Japan are now intertwined.

As Shiro Kaieda faces the greatest challenge of his journey, the battle unfolds under the mesmerizing aurora borealis in the icy, treacherous waters of the Arctic Ocean. The stage is set for an epic confrontation—one that will determine not only the survival of Yamato but also the future of an entire nation.
