“We Were Dangerous” Trailer Revealed: A Bold Coming-of-Age Drama

by Barbara

ComingSoon is excited to exclusively reveal the trailer for We Were Dangerous, a poignant coming-of-age drama that marks the directorial debut of Josephine Stewart-Te Whiu. Produced by Taika Waititi, the film premiered at SXSW 2024, where it was awarded the Special Jury Award.

The trailer introduces a gripping story set in 1954, where a group of teenage girls are isolated on a remote island after being sent to the Te Motu School for Incorrigible and Delinquent Girls. Struggling with the oppressive Christian indoctrination imposed by the institution, the girls form deep bonds of friendship and defiance, ultimately rebelling against the control placed on them.

Starring Rima Te Wiata, Erana James, Nathalie Morris, and Manaia Hall, We Were Dangerous explores themes of rebellion, survival, and girlhood. The screenplay, penned by Maddie Dai, is brought to life with powerful performances and a raw emotional narrative. The film was shot in Ōtautahi Christchurch, Aotearoa New Zealand, and boasts executive producers Taika Waititi, Carthew Neal, Bill Way, Elliott Whitton, and Emily Gotto, with Morgan Waru and Polly Fryer serving as producers.

Stewart-Te Whiu, reflecting on the film’s themes, stated, “I don’t think there was ever a time when society wasn’t trying to exert control over our bodies and relationships. Well, guess what? Enough’s enough. It’s time to tear up the playbook. This film is a love letter to the fierce, funny, and complex bonds between women. Let’s embrace the power of girlhood. North America, are you ready?”

Mark Sayre, CEO of The Forge, also expressed excitement, saying, “We Were Dangerous is exactly the kind of bold, urgent, and fiercely original storytelling that The Forge was built to champion. Josephine Stewart-Te Whiu’s powerful feature debut is a vital, deeply felt story of resistance, girlhood, and survival—one that resonates far beyond its period setting. We are honored to bring this remarkable film to North American audiences and can’t wait for them to experience its raw emotion, stunning performances, and unflinching vision on the big screen.”

We Were Dangerous is slated for a theatrical release in select North American cities on April 4, 2025, including Los Angeles, New York City, San Francisco, Austin, and Seattle. The film will expand to additional markets starting April 11, 2025.
