‘Junk World’ : Takahide Hori’s Dystopian Sequel

by Barbara

An official trailer has been released for Junk World, the highly anticipated sequel to Takahide Hori’s 2017 indie stop-motion film Junk Head. This new film, which is set to hit Japanese theaters on June 13, 2025, is the second installment in a planned trilogy exploring the bizarre and dystopian universe of Junk Head.

Junk World takes viewers back to a time 1,042 years before the events of its predecessor. As with Junk Head, the sequel features the same unique stop-motion animation style, filled with strange, imaginative creatures and intricate puppet designs. Hori’s work continues to captivate with its intricate world-building and a hauntingly beautiful yet chaotic visual aesthetic that evokes comparisons to Phil Tippett’s Mad God (2021).

The film’s narrative delves deeper into the underground world where cloned humanoid beings, known as Mulligans, live in a fragile and tension-filled coexistence with the human race. After a rebellion by the Mulligans, the world is divided, with humanity forced to live above ground while the Mulligans rule the underground. Set 230 years after the third cease-fire agreement, Junk World follows a team of human and Mulligan investigators sent to investigate strange occurrences in the underground city of Carp Bar. The team, led by Captain Tris, a human, and Dante, an original Mulligan clone, embarks on a dangerous mission. However, they soon find themselves in the crosshairs of the Gyula cult, who targets Tris as a rare specimen. Accompanied by her robot escort Robin, Tris faces a series of mysteries and challenges that will uncover deeper secrets about the underground world and the fate of her team.

Directed, written, and animated by Hori, Junk World marks a significant milestone in the filmmaker’s career, following his first feature Junk Head and several shorts. Hori began working on the project in 2022, and fans have eagerly awaited its release. Though Junk World will be released in Japan first, international release dates have yet to be confirmed.
