The highly anticipated drama The Life of Chuck, starring Tom Hiddleston and Chiwetel Ejiofor, has unveiled its first teaser trailer. Based on Stephen King’s 2020 novella, the film is described as both “life-affirming” and “genre-bending,” exploring the life of Charles ‘Chuck’ Krantz, a man whose story unfolds in reverse.
Hiddleston leads a star-studded cast, portraying Chuck at various stages of his life, joined by Jacob Tremblay, Benjamin Pajak, and Cody Flanagan. Chuck’s journey, which begins with his tragic death at 39 from a brain tumor, is told through three distinct chapters, moving backward through his life from death to childhood. The teaser trailer, which showcases Chuck across different points in his life, culminates with a poignant line from the character: “The universe is large, and it contains multitudes, but it also contains me.”
Directed by acclaimed horror filmmaker Mike Flanagan, The Life of Chuck also features performances from Annalise Basso, Karen Gillan, Matthew Lillard, Mark Hamill, Kate Siegel, and Nick Offerman. The film’s synopsis teases a world where billboards celebrating Chuck’s life stand amidst chaos, with no one in the town knowing who he really is, even as his story holds answers to their crumbling world.
While the film won’t reach theaters until June 6 in the US, it has already received positive early reviews following its world premiere at the 49th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in September. With an impressive 85% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 40 reviews, the film has generated buzz for its powerful storytelling. Mashable called it “glorious,” urging audiences to experience it on the big screen with others, while the Movie Madness Podcast praised it as a “life-affirming journey” and one of the best adaptations of King’s work.
The Life of Chuck is set for release in US cinemas on June 6. A UK release date has yet to be confirmed.
