Warner Bros. Japan has released the first teaser trailer for All You Need Is Kill, an upcoming animated adaptation of the Japanese science fiction light novel. Originally penned by Hiroshi Sakurazaka and illustrated by Yoshitoshi Abe, the novel was first published in 2004 and quickly gained popularity. It has since inspired manga and graphic novel adaptations, along with a 2014 live-action film, Edge of Tomorrow, starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, which was directed by Doug Liman.
The teaser trailer for the anime provides a glimpse into the gripping narrative of All You Need Is Kill, where the story centers on a relentless time loop caused by an alien invasion. The plot follows Rita, who finds herself stuck in an endless cycle of reliving the same day after an unidentified extraterrestrial plant invades Earth. With every repetition, Rita’s memories and combat skills evolve, transforming her into a fierce warrior. However, the emotional toll of the repeated deaths and solitude begins to erode her spirit. That is until she crosses paths with Keiji, a fellow soldier trapped in the same time loop. Together, the two lost souls may hold the key to altering their fate.
Directed by Kenichiro Akimoto, the film brings a wealth of experience to the table. Akimoto has previously contributed to various visual effects projects, including Halo Legends (2010), Green Lantern: Emerald Knights (2011), Berserk: The Golden Age Arc III – The Advent (2013), Harmony (2015), Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE (2015), and Children of the Sea (2019). Akimoto also directed the 2021 film Fortune Favors Lady Nikuko.
Produced by Studio 4°C alongside Warner Bros. Japan, the anime movie All You Need Is Kill promises to deliver an exciting new take on the original light novel. Although no official release date has been set, fans can expect further updates as production progresses.
