Following its premiere at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, the newly released trailer for The Wedding Banquet offers a fresh twist on the queer rom-com genre. Directed by Andrew Ahn, known for Fire Island, the film reimagines Ang Lee’s 1993 classic, The Wedding Banquet, with a diverse and dynamic cast.
Led by Bowen Yang, Lily Gladstone, Kelly Marie Tran, Joan Chen, and Oscar-winning actress Youn Yuh-Jung, the film centers on a chosen family who stage a fake wedding between Min (Han Gi-Chan) and Angela (Tran). The purpose of the ruse is to secure Min’s green card and allow Lee (Gladstone) to receive IVF treatment. However, their plans take an unexpected turn when Min’s grandmother arrives from Korea, eager to turn the event into an extravagant celebration.
The Wedding Banquet has already garnered positive reviews, with Variety’s Carlos Aguilar praising Ahn as a “talented and versatile storyteller.” He highlighted the performances, particularly the lighter role of Gladstone, whose gravitas shines even in this more comedic setting. Tran’s portrayal is noted for carrying significant emotional weight throughout the film.
Distributed by Bleecker Street, The Wedding Banquet is set for a theatrical release on April 18, 2025.
