‘Doc’ Season Finale Sets Up Major Cliffhangers and Love Triangle Drama

by Barbara

The first season of Fox’s Doc, based on the Italian series Doc – Nelle tue mani, wrapped up with a dramatic season finale Tuesday, leaving viewers on the edge of their seats with two major cliffhangers. The episode saw key developments for central characters Amy (Molly Parker) and Richard (Scott Wolf) that set the stage for a potentially explosive Season 2.

Amy confronts Richard about his involvement in the death of his patient, Bill Dixon, uncovering a troubling secret: Richard was distracted on the day of Bill’s passing because his son was entangled in a police matter. Ultimately, Richard is held accountable for his actions and fired from his position by the end of the episode. Meanwhile, the romantic tension between Amy and Jake (Jon-Michael Ecker) escalates after Jake witnesses a moment of intimacy between Amy and her ex-husband, Michael (Omar Metwally), leaving him questioning the future of his relationship with Amy.

Executive producers Hank Steinberg and Barbie Kligman sat down to discuss the season finale, the series’ development, and the upcoming Season 2, which has already been renewed for 22 episodes.

Medical Dramas’ Resurgence and ‘Doc’s’ Unique Appeal

As medical dramas make a comeback on television, Kligman reflects on the genre’s enduring appeal. “Medical dramas have always been a solid format, with built-in stakes,” she said. “We were fortunate to adapt a premise that felt fresh and unique, and our challenge was to offer something that hadn’t been done before.”

Steinberg echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the show’s blend of familiar elements with something new. “It’s fresh, but it’s also old-fashioned in the best way. People will care about these characters, and they’ll cry in that bittersweet way at the end of each episode,” he explained. “The show connects because we’re living in a time where people feel disconnected. Our characters are aspirational—they’re trying to be their best selves, rather than feeding into negativity.”

Balancing Medical Cases and Personal Drama

A key challenge for the writers has been striking the right balance between the medical and personal storylines. “We typically work with an A and B medical story, but those stories serve to advance our characters’ journeys,” Steinberg noted. “While the medical cases are important, it’s the characters that resonate with audiences in the long run.”

Kligman added that while the show remains a medical procedural, the personal dynamics often take center stage. “At first, we thought the split would be 70-30 between medical and personal stories, but it’s more like 60-40. Even when we focus on the medicine, it’s really about the characters.”

Departure from the Italian Original

While Doc is based on an Italian series, the show has evolved significantly since its inception. “We moved beyond the original storylines fairly quickly,” Steinberg revealed. “We’ve made big changes to the format, and while we still draw from the Italian version, our characters have developed their own distinct lives.”

Kligman noted that the Italian series had a larger ensemble cast, which led to some adjustments in the American adaptation. “We focused on the best elements of the original and built characters from there,” she said.

Romance and Tension Ahead

The love triangle between Amy, Jake, and Michael is a key plot point heading into the next season. Kligman teased that the tension will continue to unfold, saying, “There’s a lot more to explore in this triangle. You can love two people at the same time, and we think the audience will connect with that complexity.”

Steinberg discussed the dynamics of Amy’s relationships, saying that while the love triangle felt like an emotional rebound for Amy, it was also grounded in real human experience. “We wanted it to feel organic, and it paid off in an unexpected way. Amy’s journey through grief is complicated, and this relationship adds another layer to her story,” he explained.

Jewish Representation on Screen

One subtle yet meaningful detail in the show is Jake’s chai necklace, a symbol of Jewish faith and life. “We wanted to depict a positive portrayal of a Jewish character,” Steinberg said. “Given the current climate for Jewish communities in the U.S., we felt it was important to create a meaningful representation.”

Kligman shared that the chai necklace was a personal touch, as it belonged to her late father, who was a doctor. “The chai means ‘life,’ and it’s a beautiful connection to Jake’s character,” she said.

Scott Wolf’s Dr. Richard Miller: A Villain in the Making?

With the season finale bringing Richard’s actions to light, fans are left wondering about his future on the show. Kligman hinted that this isn’t the last we’ll see of Wolf’s character. “We love Scott, and we love the way he’s portrayed Richard. I wouldn’t say this is the end for him, but I’m not giving you more,” she teased.

Addressing Real-World Health Issues in Future Episodes
As health-related topics, such as vaccine debates, become more prominent in the political sphere, Steinberg acknowledged the possibility of incorporating these issues into the show. “We try not to get overtly political, but we do reflect the world around us. We may explore these issues in a way that doesn’t preach to the audience,” he said.

Kligman added that ethical debates, particularly those with valid arguments on both sides, offer the richest material for storytelling. “The most interesting stories are the ones that show the complexity of an issue, without simplifying it,” she explained.

Molly Parker’s Powerful Performance

Both producers spoke highly of Molly Parker’s portrayal of Amy, particularly her nuanced performance in transitioning from “old Amy” to “new Amy.” Steinberg praised her ability to blend compassion with the defensive tendencies her character develops over time. “Molly brings Amy to life in a way that feels fully authentic, no matter where she is emotionally,” he said.

As the series heads into its second season, Doc promises even more drama, character development, and emotional depth, continuing to explore the intersection of medical challenges and personal growth.
