A new live-action Power Rangers series is currently in the works for Disney+ and 20th Century Television. The highly anticipated project is set to be overseen by Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz, who are in talks to write, produce, and serve as showrunners. Steinberg and Shotz are already familiar with the Disney+ platform, as they are the showrunners for the upcoming Percy Jackson and the Olympians series.
Hasbro will be responsible for producing the Power Rangers series, which aims to reinvent the iconic franchise for a new generation of viewers while staying true to its loyal fanbase. The reboot will introduce fresh storylines and characters, expanding the universe while honoring the original show’s legacy.
Initially, the Power Rangers project was being developed for Netflix, where Jonathan Entwistle (known for The End of the F**ing World*) was to lead a broader cinematic universe encompassing both TV shows and movies. However, after two years of development, Hasbro decided to take the series in a new creative direction, prompting Netflix to back out.
Ayo Davis, president of Disney Branded Television, praised the success of the Percy Jackson series, noting, “From the moment ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ debuted, it was clear this series had struck a chord with fans of all ages. With season two set to premiere this December, we’re thrilled to announce that Percy’s journey will continue with a third season.”
With both Power Rangers and Percy Jackson generating excitement among fans, Disney+ continues to bolster its lineup of original series that cater to both new and established audiences.
