Disney and Pixar are set to revisit the vibrant Land of the Dead with a sequel to their 2017 animated hit, “Coco.”
Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed the development of Coco 2 during the company’s annual shareholder meeting. While details about the storyline remain under wraps, the film is scheduled for a theatrical release in 2029.
“While the film is just in the initial stages, we know it will be full of humor, heart, and adventure,” Iger stated. “And we can’t wait to share more soon.”
The sequel will reunite Coco’s original director, Lee Unkrich, with co-director Adrian Molina. Mark Nielsen, a Pixar veteran known for Toy Story 4 and Inside Out 2, will serve as producer.
The first Coco was a critical and commercial triumph, earning over $800 million at the global box office and securing two Academy Awards—Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for Remember Me. The film followed 12-year-old Miguel, a young musician who embarks on a journey through the Land of the Dead to uncover his family’s long-buried secrets.
In recent years, Pixar has found success with sequels to its most beloved properties. Inside Out 2 (2024) became the studio’s highest-grossing animated film with $1.66 billion, surpassing the record previously held by Incredibles 2 (2018) at $1.24 billion. Meanwhile, original projects like Elemental (2023) and spinoffs such as Lightyear (2022) have struggled to match past box office successes.
Pixar is currently working on a slate of anticipated films, including Toy Story 5, Incredibles 3, and original projects like Elio and Hoppers.
