by Barbara

Apple TV+ has unveiled an exciting first look at Chief of War, an upcoming nine-episode drama series written, executive produced, and starring Jason Momoa. Set against the stunning backdrop of Hawai‘i, the series is inspired by true events and explores the life of the warrior Ka‘iana, portrayed by Momoa, as he strives to unite the islands before the onset of Western colonization in the late 18th century.

Chief of War features a predominantly Polynesian cast, led by Momoa, and is described as an unprecedented portrayal of Hawai‘i’s unification and colonization during a pivotal period in its history. Joining Momoa in the ensemble cast are Luciane Buchanan, Temuera Morrison, Te Ao o Hinepehinga, Cliff Curtis, newcomer Kaina Makua, Moses Goods, Siua Ikale‘o, Brandon Finn, James Udom, Mainei Kinimaka, and Te Kohe Tuhaka.

The series is a passion project for Momoa and Thomas Pa‘a Sibbett, who both share native Hawaiian roots. Produced by FIFTH SEASON and Chernin Entertainment, Chief of War will see Momoa directing the season finale and acting as an executive producer. Doug Jung serves as the showrunner and an executive producer, alongside Sibbett, Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, Tracey Cook, and Brian Andrew Mendoza. Justin Chon directs the first two episodes and is also an executive producer. Additional executive producers include Anders Engström, Jim Rowe, Molly Allen, Francis Lawrence, and Tim Van Patten.
