PBS’ beloved crime drama Grantchester, known for its long-running success, enters its 10th season with new twists, deepened character arcs, and an exploration of dark secrets.
Since its debut on PBS’ Masterpiece in 2015, Grantchester has quietly grown into a fan favorite. Initially regarded as “the other summer mystery series,” it struggled to find its place alongside the more established Endeavour. Over time, however, it carved out its own identity, transitioning from a show marked by a change in leading actors—from James Norton to Tom Brittany—and eventually earning the nickname “The Little Show That Could.” With its steady presence each summer, the series built a loyal following, ultimately becoming a hit for PBS.
Now, as Grantchester gears up for its 10th season, it joins an elite group of shows on Masterpiece that have reached double digits. While shows like Midsomer Murders and Death in Paradise have long been running, the achievement of reaching ten seasons is rare in the Masterpiece family. The series has become a staple of British drama, consistently delivering high-quality mystery content, and this milestone is a significant one for the series and its dedicated fans.
Unlike other shows that remain faithful to their source material, Grantchester has evolved beyond the short story collections it was based on, The Sidney Chambers Mysteries by James Runcie. The show’s departure from its literary roots, especially after Norton’s exit, marks a shift in direction, making Grantchester a bit of an outlier among long-running Masterpiece mysteries. While other shows like Poirot and Morse stuck to their original stories for years, Grantchester has flourished with its own fresh take on crime-solving in the picturesque village of Grantchester.
Season 10 promises a more introspective turn for its central characters. Detective Inspector Geordie Keating (played by Robson Green) and Reverend Alphy Kottaram (Rishi Nair) return for another season of solving crimes, but this time they face not just external mysteries, but personal demons as well. As the show enters its 10th season, Alphy grapples with a long-hidden secret, forcing him to confront painful truths about his past. This revelation threatens to unravel his relationships with those closest to him, including Geordie.
In a recent interview, Green teased that the upcoming season would delve deeper into Alphy’s complex character, revealing more about his family background and the hidden secret that has shaped him. “At the end of series nine, Geordie recognizes that talking about family makes Alphy uncomfortable,” Green shared. “In season 10, we discover what family truly means to Alphy and what this dark, corrosive secret has meant for him all his life.”
While the show doesn’t plan to add any new cast members for Season 10, it will continue to feature fan favorites such as Al Weaver as Leonard Finch and Tessa Peake-Jones as Mrs. C. The returning ensemble will help maintain the familiar charm of Grantchester, with Nair making his first full season as a co-lead alongside Green.
Series creator Daisy Coulam returns as the lead writer, ensuring that the heart of Grantchester remains intact. Directors Katherine Churcher and Rob Evans will helm the episodes, maintaining the show’s signature style.
Grantchester Season 10 will premiere on Sunday, June 15, 2025, at 9 p.m. ET on PBS and the PBS Masterpiece Channel, with all eight episodes available to PBS Passport members on the premiere day. Fans can stream previous seasons on PBS Passport, as they prepare for the highly anticipated milestone season.
As the series reaches its 10th season, it proves that sometimes slow-burn hits can become lasting classics—Grantchester is proof of that.
