Ice Cube to Star in New ‘Friday’ Movie, ‘Last Friday’

by Barbara

Ice Cube has officially reached an agreement to both write and star in a new installment of the iconic Friday series, titled Last Friday, which will be developed by Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema. This new feature marks the fourth entry in the beloved comedy series and comes over two decades after Friday After Next (2002), the last film in the franchise.

Richard Brener, president and chief content officer at New Line, confirmed the deal with Ice Cube in an interview.

While Ice Cube has long expressed his intent to bring another Friday movie to the big screen, this formal deal to write and star in Last Friday signifies a major step forward in the project. In June 2024, the rapper-actor revealed on Flavor Flav’s Flavor of the Week SiriusXM show that Last Friday had gained significant momentum at Warner Bros., thanks in part to the studio’s co-chief, Michael De Luca, who took over the film division in 2022. De Luca, who had been with New Line since the early days of the Friday franchise, played a crucial role in the original trilogy’s development.

“They have new leadership: my man Mike De Luca, who used to be at New Line when I first started, when I first did the first Friday, Players Club, and All About the Benjamins,” Ice Cube said during the show.

Ice Cube starred in all three previous Friday films: Friday (1995), Next Friday (2000), and Friday After Next (2002). He co-wrote the screenplay for the original film with DJ Pooh and wrote the sequels solo. All three films were produced by New Line, which was under De Luca’s leadership at the time. In 2008, Warner Bros. acquired New Line, securing control of the Friday franchise rights.

Fans of the series are eagerly awaiting what’s to come in Last Friday, as Ice Cube’s return promises to breathe new life into the iconic comedy franchise.
