The much-anticipated Tron: Ares, the third installment in Disney’s iconic Tron franchise, has officially dropped its first trailer. Directed by Joachim Rønning, the film is slated for a theatrical release in the United States this October.
In the newly released trailer, Jared Leto stars as Ares, an artificial being sent from the digital world into reality on a high-stakes mission. Evan Peters plays Julian Dillinger, a key antagonist in the film, while Jeff Bridges returns to reprise his role as Kevin Flynn.
The film also boasts an impressive supporting cast, including Greta Lee, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan, Hasan Minhaj, Gillian Anderson, and Sarah Desjardins. The screenplay was penned by Jesse Wigutow and Jack Thorne, while the producing team features Sean Bailey, Jeffrey Silver, Justin Springer, Leto, Emma Ludbrook, and Steven Lisberger. Russell Allen serves as the executive producer.
Disney’s Tron franchise first captivated audiences in 1982 with the original Tron, written and directed by Steven Lisberger. The groundbreaking film starred Jeff Bridges, Bruce Boxleitner, and David Warner, earning Academy Award nominations for Best Costume Design and Best Sound. The franchise continued with Tron: Legacy in 2010, directed by Joseph Kosinski, which saw Bridges reprise his role alongside Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde. Tron: Legacy was nominated for a Best Sound Editing Oscar.
In addition to the films, Disney also launched an animated series, Tron: Uprising, on Disney XD in 2012. The show ran for 19 episodes, featuring a voice cast that included Bruce Boxleitner, Elijah Wood, Mandy Moore, and Nate Corddry.
