by Barbara

The first trailer and official poster for Ocean with David Attenborough have been released in anticipation of its global cinema release on May 8, coinciding with the legendary naturalist’s 99th birthday.

The Australian premiere of the highly anticipated documentary will take place on May 7 at the Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace in Cremorne, hosted by Minderoo Pictures and distributor Piece of Magic Entertainment. The event will feature a blue carpet and a Q&A session following the gala screening.

The Q&A will feature prominent conservationist, photographer, and filmmaker Valerie Taylor AM, alongside Tom Park, an Australian underwater cinematographer who contributed to the film. Park, 30, played a pivotal role in documenting the Great Barrier Reef during the 2024 mass global bleaching event. His work, which captured the reef’s response to the event and followed its recovery over the next 14 months, is a central focus of the film.

Park will also participate in additional premiere Q&A screenings in Perth on May 8 at Luna Leederville, Melbourne on May 9 at Cinema Nova, and Sydney on May 12 at the Randwick Ritz.

The documentary, directed by Toby Nowlan, Keith Scholey, and Colin Butfield, offers an inspiring message of hope from David Attenborough, who has spent seven decades filming the natural world. Through stunning cinematography, the film highlights the ocean’s importance for global survival, its diverse ecosystems, and the challenges it faces, including destructive fishing practices and coral bleaching. However, it also emphasizes optimism, showcasing global efforts to restore marine environments.

Ocean with David Attenborough will be globally released in cinemas starting May 8 and will later be available for streaming on National Geographic, Disney+, and Hulu. The film is co-produced by Silverback Films and Open Planet Studios, in collaboration with major organizations including National Geographic, All3Media International, and Minderoo Pictures.

The release is timed ahead of World Ocean Day and the 2025 United Nations Ocean Conference in France, marking a pivotal moment for ocean conservation and climate action. The film calls for urgent marine protection to safeguard the health of the ocean and, ultimately, the planet’s future.
