Apple TV+ has released the first trailer for Murderbot, an upcoming sci-fi comedy series starring Alexander Skarsgård. The series, based on the bestselling The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells, will premiere with the first two episodes on May 16, followed by new episodes every Friday through July 11.
The show follows a rogue security android, Murderbot (Skarsgård), who is on a quest to understand the meaning of life. Although it is programmed to protect humans, it finds their emotions both unappealing and perplexing. Instead, Murderbot is more interested in watching soap operas and being left alone. However, it is forced to join a new mission, protecting scientists on a dangerous planet, despite its desire to avoid human interaction.
Skarsgård describes Murderbot as “appalled” by humans, who it finds to be “idiots,” and has suffered mistreatment from previous clients. However, its perception begins to shift when it is assigned to a group of humans who reject the corporate system and treat Murderbot with respect, which makes it uncomfortable.
The series is created, written, and directed by Academy Award nominees Chris and Paul Weitz, known for About a Boy and Mozart in the Jungle. Murderbot is a 10-episode series with Martha Wells serving as a consulting producer.
The cast includes David Dastmalchian, who plays Gurathin, a human hacker enhanced by an interface, as well as Noma Dumezweni, Sabrina Wu, Akshay Khanna, Tattiawna Jones, and Tamara Podemski.
Produced by Paramount Television Studios, Murderbot is executive produced by Chris and Paul Weitz through their Depth of Field banner, along with Andrew Miano. David S. Goyer and Keith Levine executive produce for Phantom Four.
