Peacock has released a trailer for I Love You, You Hate Me, a two-part documentary that explores the intense backlash against the beloved children’s character Barney the Dinosaur. While Barney was known for spreading messages of love and kindness, the show faced a surprising amount of hatred, especially from those over the age of ten. Some even loathed the character, and the documentary dives into this fierce public reaction.
Barney & Friends, created by Sheryl Leach, debuted on PBS in 1992 and ran until 2010. While the show’s backlash was widely known, the documentary reveals the extent of the hostility, which included threats to the cast. Bob West, the original voice of Barney, shares that he received death threats aimed at him and his family.
Joel Chiodi, the executive producer of the documentary, explains, “I Love You, You Hate Me examines how a character meant to promote inclusion and kindness sparked a movement of anger that affected its creators and their futures. This documentary also highlights the beginnings of modern hate culture.”
Barney is also making a comeback in other forms. In addition to the documentary, a new movie is in the works, produced by Daniel Kaluuya, known for his role in Get Out. Kaluuya reflects on Barney’s iconic song, “I love you, you love me,” asking, “What happens when that isn’t true?” He believes the movie will bring a poignant, yet optimistic message, especially needed in today’s world.
The documentary will debut on Peacock on October 12th. It traces the rise and fall of the backlash against Barney, exploring the societal shifts that led to the widespread hatred of a children’s show character. It raises the question of whether this anger is a reflection of deeper issues in American culture.
I Love You, You Hate Me is set to reveal the lasting impact of Barney the Dinosaur on American society, and the complex emotions it stirred in its audience.
