Searchlight has unveiled the first trailer for The Roses, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman in a gripping reimagining of the 1989 black comedy The War of the Roses. Directed and produced by Jay Roach, the film brings a fresh perspective to Warren Adler’s 1981 novel of the same name, with a screenplay by Tony McNamara.
In The Roses, Cumberbatch and Colman play Ivy and Theo, a seemingly perfect couple living in California. With successful careers and a loving family, their life appears idyllic. However, as Theo’s career spirals downward while Ivy’s ambitions soar, their marriage starts to unravel, revealing long-hidden resentments. The story explores the brutal transformation of their relationship, offering a reflection on how quickly love can turn to hatred if the bond isn’t carefully nurtured.
The film is a modern-day parable about the complexities of love, as Cumberbatch describes in a preview: “Much of it is shockingly recognizable: how we struggle to show love toward the people we love the most, and how this can all go wrong very quickly.”
The Roses will be released in theaters on August 29, 2025.
