Marvel’s iconic superhero team, the Fantastic Four, is making its official MCU debut in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. The film’s new trailer showcases the team’s first major battle against the Silver Surfer, with Pedro Pascal starring as Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic), Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm (Invisible Woman), Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm (Human Torch), and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm (The Thing).
The movie also features Ralph Ineson as the villain Galactus, who threatens to consume entire planets. Other notable cast members include Julia Garner as the Silver Surfer, Paul Walter Hauser, Natasha Lyonne, and John Malkovich.
This marks the first time the Fantastic Four have appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) after Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox, which also brought the X-Men under Marvel’s control. The movie is set in a retro-futuristic version of 1960s Manhattan, where the Fantastic Four are the only superheroes—at least for now. Fans shouldn’t expect to see other Marvel heroes unless multiverse storylines come into play.
Previously, the Fantastic Four were portrayed in films by 20th Century Fox. In the 2000s, Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans, and Michael Chiklis played the team in two movies. A 2015 reboot, which starred Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan, and Jamie Bell, was widely criticized.
The MCU had teased the Fantastic Four before. In Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, John Krasinski made a brief appearance as Mr. Fantastic, only to be quickly killed off. Chris Evans also reprised his role as the Human Torch in Deadpool & Wolverine before meeting a similar fate.
