Disney+ recently debuted the trailer and key art for the second season of Light & Magic, its docuseries exploring the history and pioneering work of Lucasfilm’s visual effects division, Industrial Light & Magic (ILM). The trailer was revealed at the Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo, marking the start of the Tokyo event. The second season dives deep into the transformation of ILM as it shifted to digital filmmaking, a significant turning point in the visual effects industry.
This three-part season is now streaming on Disney+. It highlights ILM’s breakthroughs in digital effects, including the creation of fully computer-generated characters and the challenges of simulating natural elements like water. The season also sheds light on how ILM redefined cinematic storytelling despite internal struggles and skepticism from the industry.
At the Tokyo event, attendees enjoyed video greetings from director Joe Johnston and producer Ron Howard, as well as a panel discussion moderated by Star Wars actor Sam Witwer. The panel included key figures such as Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and ILM’s design expert Doug Chiang.
Produced by Brian Grazer and Ron Howard’s Imagine Documentaries, Light & Magic’s second season explores a pivotal era in visual effects history, capturing the rise of digital filmmaking. The executive producers include Grazer, Howard, Justin Wilkes, and Lawrence Kasdan. The series is directed by Johnston, with co-executive producers Jacqui Lopez, Ted Schillinger, and Michael Garcia.
